Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 at Long Beach in CA. DuVernay was introduced to art through her grandmother Denise. Her aunt was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay's dad recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to observe the house of one of the members of the jury and look through their trash. After being disappointed in journalism by the tasks she was given and deciding to go after an interest in public relations. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist in small production studios right out of school. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Alongside PR, her agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
